Apple Comes out with a Date to Debut its First Virtual Reality Headset. 1

Apple Inc. has always been a pioneer in creating and launching innovative products in the market. According to Mark Gurman, Apple has finally recognized June 5, 2023, as the most important date in its history. As this is the date it is planning to debut its first Apple VR headset, and this is being marked by Apple as the beginning of a post - iPhone era.

What Exactly is Apple’s VR Headset?

Apple calls its upcoming VR headset as Mixed- Reality Headset as it has the capability to switch between AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) technology and will have an iOS like interface.  The technology behind the upcoming Apple VR headset is focused on creating a 3D version of the iPhone’s operating system with eye- and hand tracking systems. The headset will be unique as it will be able to show Mac display and immersive videos. The headset is set to be priced at $3000, but the company is looking at developing a cheaper version of the headset later in order to enter the mass market.

Expected Specs of the Upcoming Apple VR Headset

  • The headset will feature 12 tracking cameras and these cameras will help in displaying information to two 8K displays in front of the user’s eyes.
  • A total of three displays might be there inside the Apple VR headset.
  • Apple VR headset will be a Foveated VR headset which will use eye tracking to focus on the image at which the user is looking.
  • The headset is rumoured to use OLEDoS panels to create enhanced resolution.
  • The headset will have powerful video- watching feature which will allow the users to get the feel of watching a movie in a completely different setting like in outer space or ocean.
  • Apple’s mixed- reality headsets would be heavier than the proposed AR glasses and will be similar in look and feel to other available VR headsets in the market.
  • The Mixed- Reality headset is supposed to have 15 cameras for tracking and biometrics. Eight cameras will be used to help the wearer see the world while he is wearing the mixed- reality headset.
  • There are internal sensors in the headset that automatically help in adjusting the 8K visuals according to the user’s unique facial features.
  • There are powerful cameras inside that work on translating your facial expressions in the form of a display on the outside of the device.
  • The unique part of the headset is the presence of an Apple watch- esque dial on the side which allows the user to switch between the VR views and the colour views of his physical world.
  • Rumours further reveal that Apple Mixed Reality headset will capture leg movements also.
  • VR Headset will have a curved visor on the front and this will outwardly show a wearer’s eyes with speakers on the sides. A headband will fit the device around the user’s head.
  • It will be a standalone product with a built-in battery, and the wearer can use it without connecting it to a game console like he has to do in PlayStation VR.
  • The new Mixed- Reality headset will be made from aluminium, glass and cushions.
  • According to the leaked specifications the Apple Mixed- Reality headset might use a custom version of M2 chips found in the company’s latest Macs. The second chip used by the company will be Reality Processor.
  • It will provide a much higher resolution display than the other existing VR headsets in the market. It will use two ultra-high-resolution 8K displays and advanced eye tracking technology.
  • The headset will work for two hours, per battery pack and the battery is going to be large in size.
  • SharePlay feature in the Mixed- reality headset will allow the user to watch movies or play music while he or she is immersed in the virtual world.

What Will the Apple VR Headset Debut Actually Offer?

Apple VR headset technology is actually looking at offering the creation of a new interactive world where people will interact with each other with the help of headsets rather than using pocketable touch screens for the purpose. This is the reason why apple is marking this product as the beginning of a post- iPhone era. The debut of the Apple VR Headset at the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) is going to include not only the VR headset but also its xrOS operating system and other services.

Tim Cook's Vision on Apple's AR/ VR Technology

As the cover star of the GQ’s Global creativity awards, 2023, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc. provided some insights into the AR and VR technology behind the Apple VR headset. He said, “If you think about the technology itself with augmented reality, just to take one side of the AR/VR piece, the idea that you could overlay the physical world with things from the digital world could greatly enhance people's communication, people's connection," said Cook. "It could empower people to achieve things they couldn't achieve before."

The upcoming Apple VR headset has a lot to offer to customers, but according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg it is going to be a risky, but potentially monumental launch for Apple. The headset is expensive and only its launch will decide whether it is capable enough to offer value for money to the Apple customers or not.
