New Update

There are two ways to look at how Apple has played its cards at the iPhone event this year. Firstly, the decision to discontinue iPhone 5 (it was the flagship for an year) seems rather strange, especially when older iPhone models tend to do better in terms of sales volume and margins, especially in markets like India (iPhone 4 is a good example.). However, they have replaced the iPhone 5 with iPhone 5C (where C stands for color it seems), which sports same hardware and specs but has a colorful and plasticky exterior look. Blue, Green, Pink and Yellow are not the colors that one associates with Apple but with 5C, the company has changed its pattern and tradition.

Apple has been under intense pressure from its investors and also its competitors Samsung, who have channelized Android to chart their own success story. The tech world has been talking about iPhone 5C being the first budget model that could change the way how Apple portrays itself. iPhone 5C takes cannibalization to a whole new level. Earlier this year, iOS 7 was showcased at the WWDC event by Apple and it was hard to overlook its similarities with Android as well as Windows Phone, if one may say. After launching the 5C, the first ones to begin the plastic mocking was none other than Nokia, which cheekily said, ‘Imitation is the best form of flattery' and everyone knows where the Finnish brand was coming from.

In its defense, Apple has tried to keep the money people happy with another iPhone variant, which is totally dependent on how it is priced in emerging markets like India, China and so on. With $549 (Rs 34,587) being reported as the unlocked price of the 5C, the pricing will determine whether 5C makes market sense or Apple was better off slashing the price of iPhone 5.

Moving onto the flagship iPhone 5S, the phone scores high on performance, graphics, power and imaging. The 5S sports same screen size as of its predecessor but apart from that, the latest version is a whole new beast to contend with. Touch ID is Apple's latest innovation, which negates the use of password lock. Add to the fact that the fingerprint details are stored neither on Apple server or iCloud; the whole technology is secured and well thought out.

The 5S packs a 64-bit architecture A7 chip, which in pure terms offers better performance, high-quality graphics for gaming and higher battery life. The camera of 5S is the same 8 MP, however the sensor, surface area on camera and better image stabilization have been added. We will have to wait till next week to analyze how varied markets accept the two iPhone variants and who say what, only then one can talk about whether Apple's strategy has been a failure or a masterstroke.
