Apple Inc. is increasing testing of new Macs with processors comparable to the existing M2 chip, making progress on critical new computers that might help reverse a sales dip. According to developer logs published with Bloomberg News, Apple has begun testing the latest computers with third-party programmes from the App Store to ensure compatibility. This is a crucial phase in the lead-up to releasing a new gadget.

The most significant Mac drop

After the most significant Mac drop since the dot-com crisis in 2000, Apple depends on the new computers to persuade customers. Apple had hinted that the quarter would be disappointing, but it will release accurate data on 4 May.

In this context, the new Mac will be a welcome addition. According to the test logs, Apple is preparing a laptop with processing characteristics equal to existing models but with a more prominent, higher-resolution display. This is the 15-inch MacBook Air that Apple has been preparing to release this year.

The new laptop's processor, like the existing M2, features eight primary processing cores and ten graphics cores. The device also has 8 gigabytes of RAM, like the current MacBook Air.

The central processing unit, or CPU, is still split into four high-performance and four efficiency cores. The Mac being tested also runs macOS 14.

The screen resolution of the laptop in testing - dubbed "Mac 15,3" - is the same as that of the 14-inch high-end MacBook Pro. That implies the larger Air will have the exact resolution as the MacBook Pro but far less sharpness. This strategy is consistent with how Apple has previously distinguished its consumer and professional-focused laptops.

Other modifications to the Mac will follow later

More important upgrades to the Mac will come later, with the introduction of an M3 processor. It will signify a move from the existing 5-nanometer standard to a 3-nanometer technology. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s latest chip technology enables outstanding performance and efficiency. Apple will use a similar technology in this year's new iPhones.

Apple is working on upgrading the 13-inch Air, the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro and the 24-inch iMac, in addition to the bigger MacBook Air.

Apple is working on upgrading the 13-inch Air, entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro and the 24-inch iMac, in addition to the bigger MacBook Air. The first Mac Pro to use Apple's domestic processors, Apple Silicon, is also in the works but has been delayed and subject to specification modifications. Apple intends to upgrade the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with higher-end versions of the M3 processor in the first half of 2024. Previously, developer logs revealed correct information on M2 Macs and Mac Pro testing and the identities of the company's initial high-end M1 CPUs.
