As Apple wants to stop using Qualcomm as its modem provider in 2024 and start producing its own, the tech giant's long-standing goal of producing its own modems for its iPhones appears to be finally being realised.

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona, Qualcomm's CEO stated that the company anticipates Apple to begin producing its own 5G modem chips for their 2024 iPhones. Although using Qualcomm modems in its most recent iPhone 14 models, Apple has long tried to dominate the wireless networking business, according to CNBC.

According to a report, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon stated, "We’re making no plans for 2024, my planning assumption is we’re not providing (Apple) a modem in '24, but it’s their decision to make."

The tech giant also bought Intel's modem business in 2019, according to the report, and there had been rumors that it would start using in-house parts this year.

Amon stated at MWC that Qualcomm had previously informed investors in 2021 that it did not anticipate providing modems for the iPhone in 2023; however, Apple later decided to extend the contract for an additional year.

However, he stated that the royalty was "independent from providing a chip," as mentioned in the report, but he did not confirm whether Apple would pay Qualcomm QTL licenses if it switched to its own modems.

In the meantime, Qualcomm has announced that the majority of Android smartphones will incorporate its Snapdragon satellite technology.

According to the company, Honor, Motorola, Nothing, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi's upcoming smartphones will make use of the "Snapdragon Satellite."
