Application servers are the hottest things around in the enterprise applications domain. There has been a rush of players pushing their wares, but some, like HP have already bitten the dust, and given up on the segment. 

How hot are application servers? 56% of the respondents polled currently deploy application servers, while 27% plan to deploy one in the next year.

Oracle wins in this category with a wide margin. The closest competitors to it are IBM WebSphere with a UPI of 43% and Novell with a UPI of 40%. SunOne and Macromedia have also made it to the Users’ Choice Club. 

Other brands that came up with some support, but failed to make the cut are BEA WebLogic, Sybase, Apple WebObjects, JBoss and Tomcat. 

The 40% UPI of Novell is something of a surprise. For those who are not aware of the fact, Novell does have an App server, and it is called

exteNd.

Oracle got most of its votes from the North zone and a large number from the South. Companies that have an IT spend of over Rs one crore, gave Oracle its maximum votes. In terms of verticals, government departments and research bodies opted for Oracle.

IBM is equally strong in the North, South and the West. Though Novell got more votes than IBM in the West, it lost out to the latter in the North. 

IBM got maximum votes from companies with an IT spend of between Rs 50 lakh and Rs one crore and Novell from companies with a spend of between Rs 25 lakh to Rs one

crore.

In terms of votes from the verticals, IBM got almost equal votes from all verticals, whereas Novell got the maximum of its votes from banking and finance and services. BFSI is an area, where if you remember, Netware was traditionally strong.

Application servers have had a rather meteoric rise to fame. And a question that many keep asking is whether they would have an equally meteoric decline.
