As Real as It Gets- Metaverse Gaming

The onset of Web3, cryptocurrency and the metaverse has brought along a lot of changes, to the extent of creating brand new industries. One such industry is that of metaverse gaming, which incorporates all three previously mentioned technologies to create a play-to-earn gaming experience.

The ideal metaverse is envisioned to be like that of the movie ‘Ready Player One’. A seamless digital world complete with all aspects of current reality including a functioning economy, unfettered public interaction with full freedom of control over one’s avatar and naturally, the central focus which is a plethora of games and activities to choose from.

While the current state of the metaverse is far from the objective, we are slowly making strides in that direction. Cryptocurrencies, though still quite unpredictable, are the beginnings of a stable economy. NFT’s are equivalent of assets and liabilities that can be owned. Avatars are slowly improving in degrees of freedom and interaction. But by far, the greatest developments have been in made in the gaming sector.

Currently metaverse gaming is focused on the concept of play-to-earn. By playing games that are generally in virtual or augmented reality, users can earn rewards in the form of NFT’s or Cryptocurrencies. Games like Axie Infinity, Decentraland, My Neighbour Alice and many more have found a lot of success in this area.

What might surprise some is that metaverse games have been around for much longer than some would think. Sandbox created in 2012 and Fortnite created in 2017 both fit the bill of a metaverse game. Many game development companies have projects in the running to create metaverse games as it is predicted to be the next internet. Hopefully, we will get to see many more improvements in the technological basis of the metaverse so that the experience can be as close to reality as is envisioned.
