New Update

If you want the features, upgradability and price of a desktop PC,and portability of a laptop, then D1 series of portable PCs from Asus is for you. It’s a bare bone PC ie, you can put in your own hard disk, RAM and processor. It uses standard RAM and processor of a desktop PC, but the hard drive is mobile. It’s shaped like a regular laptop, weighs 3.3 kgs, and has a nice 15” LCD display. It doesn’t have battery backup by default, though it’s available as an option.

The machine we got for review had a P4 1.8 GHz, with 256 MB PC-2100 (266 MHz) RAM. It performed well in Content Creation Winstone 2001 with a score of 51.6, but wasn’t as good in Business Winstone 2001 with a score of 33.2. The results were compared with PCs of equivalent configuration, having a P4 1.7 GHz and another with a P4 2 GHz (see table).

Both were tested with an Intel 850D motherboard and a GeForce2 GTS card with 128 MB of video memory. Overall, the machine is suitable for doing regular office work. Don’t expect great graphics performance from it, because it has onboard graphics, that can’t be upgraded. This is one area where you’re sacrificing performance for portability.
