Infotech has deployed a system whereby the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport
Corporation (BMTC), the city transport bus service, enables mobile phone users
to determine arrival time of the next bus to his destination.
Bangalore is home to a commuter population of over 38 lakhs of which 46% uses
BMTC buses on a daily basis. Most of them have no idea about the schedule
followed by BMTC resulting in long waits in bus stands and consequently lesser
usage of public transport.
According to the business model, if one customer sends two SMSs a day, the
revenue earned will be to Rs. 8 lakhs per month. The service envisages the usage
location data from GPS to inform the commuters about bus locations, as he sends
as SMS query with the route number. The server processes the request, receives
information from the GPS device fitted in the bus and sends back an SMS
indicating the current location of the bus. The project is now in process of
being installed in the public transport departments of Indore and Kolkata.
