Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited has its own Ku-Band VSAT network
connecting 300 locations with centralized Hub at their Integrated Data Centre
(IDC). In the last couple of years the number of users, applications and network
usage for working on various had increased phenomenally at all the locations.
The VSAT was not able to handle increased bandwidth load because of new
generation applications. Even, new SAP version demanded more bandwidth per user.
Also, locations were required to access Internet based applications to cater
business needs. The limitation of old VSAT network was that TDMA VSAT locations
can go upto 128 Kbps and SCPC VSAT locations can not go beyond 128 Kbps. The
main issue in front of the company was the security of data as it is going
through a remotely located ISP's Network. The complexity of the project was also
very high, including managing approx 200 Tunnels in one router and connecting
locations to two different datacenters.
They implemented MPLS VPN connectivity to 176 BPCL locations out of 181
locations across India over BSNL / MTNL networks. Balance 5 locations were
technically non-feasible and they are trying to get Multiprotocol Levl Switching
(MPLS) connectivity through radio frequency at these 5 balance locations. All
locations are directly connected to both the datacenter through GRE tunnel
pointing towards better security.
