Computer Associates’ backup solution BEB (BrightStor Enterprise Backup) is for enterprises using more than one platform–Unix, Windows NT/2000, Solaris–that need to backup servers, desktops, and live databases on their network. It can also be used on a SAN.

It is GUI-based and has wizards to guide you. You can define policies for the type of backup, enable CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) for backup verification, set alerts and define rights for administrator, operator, or user.

The basic solution of BEB lets you backup servers and clients to a tape drive or library. Additional functionality includes the addition of agents for databases like Oracle, Sybase, and SQL; mail servers like MS Exchange and Lotus Notes; and for Windows NT/2000 clients. Backups with the database and application agents are done online while these applications are running.

For restore operations, BEB has a Windows Explorer-like interface that takes you to the exact machine and folders you’d backed up. It comes with a Disaster Recovery option and InoculateIT to protect your backup server (but not other machines on your network) from virus infections.

Prices depend on the functionality you want and the number of servers you want it on. A basic solution will cost around Rs 600,000.
