Buffalo Drive Station is a 160GB external hard drive, meant for small to
medium enterprises to store and safeguard their important data. It has a
7,200rpm drive inside with 8MB buffer memory, and connects via USB 2.0
interface. It also comes with a useful backup software called Memeo auto backup
that can help in performing automated and scheduled data backups. The drive also
has a secure lock for protecting the data it stores from unauthorized access.
The drive station can be used as an additional data storage for your NAS.
We tested the drive using WinBench99 and PCMark04 benchmarks. These use a
variety of tests such as file copying, file compression/decompression,
Photoshop, FrontPage, Premiere, etc to check a drive's overall performance.
This Drive Station is better than the previous one of same capacity (160GB) in
every score chart.

Comparing this drive with the Maxtor OneTouch II Small Business Edition,
Buffalo performed better in average data transfer rate and showed lower disk
access time as well. The average data transfer rate of Drive Station was
recorded as 33.6 MBps, whereas that of Maxtor was 32.3MBps. In Business disk and
High-end disk, the Drive Station scored 8.38MBps and 19.6MBps respectively. This
was lesser than Maxtor's corresponding 12.1MBps and 29.7MBps readings. The
Drive Station clocked better disk access time of 14ms against the 16.7 ms given
by the Maxtor drive. However, CPU Utilization of Buffalo was high at 87.5%
against 79.7% of the Maxtor. In HDD test suite of PCMark04, it was able to score
4145 with file copying speed of 28.5MBps.
Bottom line: Overall, the drive showed very good performance. Add to
it the price and the free backup software, and the drive is a good buy. Showing
nice performance and coming with a free backup software, this drive is worth the
buy at Rs. 9,000.
