Canon MF4890dw is a monochrome laser MFP. Setting up the device is not troublesome at all. You can connect the MFP directly to a PC through USB 2.0 port. The tiltable control panel has a 5 line monochrome display which lies along a set of control keys for print, scan, fax and copy. There are many other keys like numeric keys, menu, paper settings, etc. They are easy to operate and sized sparingly. The build quality is sturdy but the size is optimal for office. The energy saver mode makes the MFP inactive and the quite mode makes printing & copying noise free.

We used a standard ISO page for evaluating its printing, copying and scanning capabilities. Its performance is good with a print speed of 22ppm with first page coming out in 8sec. For duplex printing, there were a total of 12 pages in a minute. You can use the machine for wired and wireless printing but there is no direct USB printing capability. Print resolution is as high as up to 1200x600dpi, but the print quality is nice and crisp even at 600x600dpi. Copying is pretty much on the same line of printing. We got a speed of 23 CPM & 13 CPM for simplex and duplex copying respectively, with the first copy taking up 7 sec in simplex one. Maximum number of copies possible at a time is 99. Scan time is decent at 12 sec/page with scan to PDF, JPEG, TIFF, PNG options available.
Duplex scan is a special feature which can reduce your effort and time. Overall, a good printer at a good price, but do check out the review of Panasonic DP-MB300 (July 2012 issue) which comes in the same price range and has good set of features & performance on its side.

Bottomline: Good performance, feature and low price make this MFP
a good deal for small offices.
