National Institute of Technology, Rourkela with 2500 computer users have
multiple users sharing the same machine. Unmonitored and unrestricted Internet
access to students and other users at NIT resulted in heavy usage of
applications, resulting in a lot of bandwidth consumption alongwith easy entry
of threats. With limited IT budgets, NIT went for Cyberoam CR1500i appliance to
combat security issues. Identifying individual users and getting information on
their online activities even in a shared-machine environment is now possible.
New software versions are released every quarter and the upgrade procedure is
automatic, without requiring any manual intervention of the network
administrator. By identifying and controlling the user, NIT has complete
visibility and control over its network security. Besides this, total bandwidth
management and load balancing and gateway failover give NIT a strong hold on its
IT resources and their optimal performance. The only challenge that NIT faced
before the deployment was to study the surfing patterns and bandwidth usage
trends for users s and bandwidth usage policies in NIT's network.
