Dell XPS Duo is a sturdy ultra book convertible with a swivel based mechanism which converts the ultra book into a tablet. The 12-inch multi-touch display revolves within a thinly built metallic frame. This is something new so doubts about its practicality are natural. There is nothing to worry though as the frame is well-built and holds the tablet in good stead. You just have to push the display at the bottom and it flips backwards to adjust itself on the hinges.

The device is made of carbon and aluminium and looks a lot like Dell XPS 12 ultra book. It weighs around 1.5 Kg, which is slightly more than Macbook Air, and so is easy to lug around. It has good backlit keys with a rubberised palm rest, a great touchpad and a dazzling full HD display with great touch experience. In our benchmark test, PC Mark 07, it did well with a score of 4360, while its battery back-up is up to 5 hours.

It is powered by 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and Intel HD 4000 graphics. The display has a Windows button at the bottom for instant access to the Windows tiles page. Its limitation is that it has very few connectivity options like 2 USB ports and an external volume key, whereas, Sony Vaio Duo has other ports like HDMI, VGA and Ethernet. It weighs around 1.5 Kg and costs Rs 89,000. Now, for the same amount you can buy an ultra book and an iPad and their combined weight would be slightly more than this convertible.

Bottomline: It wouldn't be fair to write it off, simply because of the price, limited connectivity and weight. We have found the user experience highly enjoyable but overall, its far from an ideal laptop/tablet replacement.
