Download Accelerator Plus 5.0 (beta)

Price: Freeware
Meant for: Office or home use
Features: Simultaneously downloads many files, recovers from a lost Net connection, pauses and resumes downloads

DAP downloads a file quickly by breaking it into many segments and downloading each from the best server. It can also simultaneously download multiple files, but that can slow down the download. DAP has auto-resume functionality for servers that support it. Dial-up users not using a proxy can use ‘AlwaysResume’ to resume downloading even from servers that don’t support resuming. This works for files less than 10 MB.

You can also set the time for downloads, scan files for viruses, save files in predefined folders, and shut down the computer once downloads are over. It supports IE (4.x/5.x or higher) or Netscape Communicator/Navigator (4.x or higher), but not Netscape 6.x. To install DAP, download it from and follow configuration options. To test it, we downloaded a 1.7 MB file first without using DAP and then using it. With DAP it took roughly 3 min and without it 8 min. At 8 kbps the transfer rate with DAP was roughly double than without it (3.5 kbps).

DAP 5.0 is free to download. If you register for $29.95, you get features like Leecher (to download all files in the directory you’re in), free updates for the first year, technical support, and removal of banner advertisements. But these are not worth the amount, especially when you can download the higher version when it’s out.
