New Update

The enterprise UPS market underwent a shift about three years ago. No longer were vendors selling plain old UPSs in the market, but complete power conditioning solutions. Therefore we also changed the category to enterprise power conditioning two years ago. APC continues to remain the winner in this category as well, and Emerson continues as runner up. Emerson's votes have been fluctuating at the number two position. It had a UPI of 41 in 2003, which changed to 23 last year. This year again, it's come back to 43. The remaining players have been more or less consistent, with the only exception that Powerware makes an entry into the club this year, and Compact moves out. The interesting part in the brand loyalty shift here is that by and large for every brand in the club, the brand shift is largely towards only a single other brand that's a part of the club.

Otherwise, they'd want to shift to some other brand that's not a part of the club. For instance, 10% of DB Power owners want to shift only to Powerware, while another 5% want to shift to some other brand. Similarly, 10% of Powerware customers want to shift to Emerson, while another 5% want to shift to some other brand. Around 8% of Numeric's existing owners want to shift to APC, and interestingly, there's no other brand shift for this company. Numeric incidentally also has the second highest brand loyalty. APC also enjoys the highest percentage of brand loyalty amongst all others. Very few of its existing owners said that they want to buy any other brand. Not only that, but many owners of other power conditioning equipment brands want to shift to APC. These include around 7% of Emerson owners, 8% of Numeric owners, and a whopping 21% of owners of other power conditioning brands. Looking at regional support, we find that APC enjoys highest support from all four regions compared to others. Numeric and Powerware didn't get any support from the West or East.

Brand

Shift (%) 2003

Emerson got good support from the western region, possibly because it's based out of Mumbai. While 50% of the votes from the West went to APC, 33% went to Emerson. Looking at the votes according to company size, we find that in companies with 1000 crores+ turnover, APC got 30% of the votes, while Emerson was at 20%. This was the closest Emerson got to APC amongst companies of all sizes. The interesting battle is happening in companies of up to 50 crores turnover, because barring APC, which got the highest votes, all others got equal votes. These include Numeric, Emerson, and DB Power.
