Dax networks has introduced two enterprise-class modular routers (the DXMP series) for connecting your branch offices over the WAN links. All these routers have different connectivity options that you can choose from according to your needs. Two of their models, DXMP 2692 and 3640B, offer a wide range of connectivity options with multi-protocol and multi-vendor support. The difference between the two routers is that the 3640B also has a built-in firewall.
These routers are meant for large enterprises for running applications and services securely on a WAN. You can use them as a gateway device between PSTN and the IP network, when it will convert between voice signal and IP messages and implement voice-relay via the existing IP networks and thus help save on your voice phone costs.
Both routers are designed in a modular structure and have a very flexible configuration. Their features include high performance
(upto 125 Kpps), HPD (High Port Density), multi-vendor compatibility with all industry standard protocols, end-to-end
QoS, support for VoIP and legacy networks, and also bandwidth optimization.
Both routers have four high-density network interface slots. These can take upto four high-density network modules. The DXMP-2692 and 3640B routers provide a maximum of 16 high speed Sync serial / Async ports, 16 BRI U ports, 4 Channelized E1 /E1 PRI ports and 6 Fast Ethernet ports all on a single chassis.
On the bandwidth part, the two routers have WAN optimization features such as DDR (dial-on-demand routing), compression, filtering and BOD (bandwidth-on-demand). The routers intelligently optimize the bandwidth and use the available bandwidth efficiently.
The routers also have a very efficient QoS service. They provide guaranteed bandwidth for various network services and applications. Their built-in provision for queue management (PQ, FIFO and
WFQ) ensures QoS on your networks.

Both routers feature MPC 8245 CPUs and a console port for configuring the router using an RS232 cable. The rest of their similarities and differences are provided in the table alongside for your convenience.
The Bottom Line: If you are looking forward to deploying applications or services on your WAN link, then these routers are for you. They can integrate branch offices with the WAN applications.
