ASP.NET is the new version of the very popular Active Server Pages technology for creating dynamic Web pages. This version uses the .NET platform for creating pages quickly and easily.

Essential Asp.NET is a book that teaches you the fundamentals of ASP.NET in a clear and consistent manner. It is aimed at the VBScript/VB/VB. NET programmer as all the examples in the book are in VB.NET and not C#.

The book, though small as compared to other books relating to ASP.NET, covers a lot of ground and fairly in depth. The author starts off with an introduction on what’s new in ASP.NET and moves on to the standard Web Forms and Web.Config customization.

It then diverts from the normal path and goes into depth about the HTTP pipeline and how to use it effectively in

ASP.NET.

The book also talks about databinding, diagnosing and error handling, and of course validations in detail. I was happy to see a large section on building custom controls. Many other books that I’ve seen gloss over this topic, although it is an important one. Finally the

book talks about state management, security and caching.

Overall the book is a must read for both beginners and intermediate programmers of ASP.NET. Vb.NET programmers will find a lot of pre-built code that would make their understanding and life much easier. However, C# programmers may not find anything too useful in this as all examples are in VB only.
