eTrust Firewall 3.1

PCQ Bureau
New Update

This is an Enterprise firewall that secures your network-based on parameters like network services, applications, source and target addresses and more. It can work either on a Win NT 4.0 Server with SP6 or a Win 2000 Server with SP1. The firewall uses what’s called the State-Aware Packet Filter Technology. For incoming and outgoing traffic, the firewall hides your network from outsiders using NAT (Network Address Translation). It also allows users to access your network from outside (public to private network) without revealing any machine specific IP addresses.

eTrust is very easy to implement and has a wizard to configure it for simple networks. You can define your own firewall policies and even verify them by Verify policy button. The firewall gives centralized management, allowing you to manage your entire network from a single console. Firewall rules can be configured to authenticate users based on user ID and user groups within an NT domain, if you’re on one. The most interesting feature we found is its calendaring supports, which allows you to activate/deactivate firewall rules based on a calendar. There’s also an option to ‘scan the firewall for vulnerabilities,’ which is basically meant to test the firewall for any loopholes.

It supports drag ‘n’ drop network-policy

changes making it very easy to configure

The firewall has a neat Java-based interface that is very easy to navigate through. It’s split into two panes, with the left containing all possible configuration options and the right containing their properties. The best part is that in order to configure the firewall, you just need to drag and drop a network card from the graphical interface on the appropriate network segments (Internet and Private Network). Then create the rules for the firewall or use the wizard. After this, simply click on the deploy button and your firewall is ready for action.

We tested eTrust Firewall on a dual-homed server configured as a gateway, one was connected to Internet and other was connected to our private network. Rule creation and implementation worked fine. We were able to block specific outbound traffic, and allowed a specific client to access the internal network. You can also create reports on a monthly, weekly, and even daily basis showing all traffic and intrusion detection information.
