Thanks to the continual growth of modern day computing devices, traditional devices have been getting upgraded ever since. However, the existing computing devices do need a make-over. With phones, TVs, and tablets getting smarter by the day, the future lies in devices that can integrate all of the above. Convergence across gadgets, resulting into hybrids or 'gadgets with dual lives', would be preferred more.

Devices That Will Lead

Going by the recent Gartner report, thin-and-light mobile Personal Computers with tablet-like features will soon become mainstream. The devices that are expected to lead the way in personal computing space primarily include tablets and ultrabooks.

Tablet PCs have the potential to become the 'most preferred gadget' for consumers in years to come.

Limitations of Tablets

But, the tablet as a full-fledged computer still has some limitations, lack of true multi-tasking being one. Tablets still have limited usability, which can further be addressed by the new generation Ultrabooks. They are portable yet power-packed. We expect user preferences to increase manifold for Ultrabooks, considering the form-factor is of key importance to today's consumer. For people using cloud computing (those that are hosted online rather than directly on the computer), Ultrabooks will prove to be their first choice.

Where Smartphones Shine, and Where They Don't

Smartphones have made a profound impact on our day-to-day lives. From being a mere repository of our contacts, they have taken a much larger role to play, viz. browsing/surfing, accessing emails, voice recognition and much more. However, when it comes to creating content, smartphones take a back seat. Creating word documents, processing large spreadsheets, making presentations are a few areas that keep smartphones away from replacing PCs. Moreover, PC sales have always been higher than that of smartphones and we expect the trend to continue even in the near future.

And the Future of Personal Computing is...

In the face of advancing mobile technology, portable, light-weight and 'easy-to-carry' Personal Computers would become more popular. Change is inevitable and it will happen within the next 10-15 years and with constant innovation on the cards, it's difficult to sketch the exact future of computing devices, which can satiate our thirst for 'more'. But, what's certain is, that consumers will be inclined towards a device that could be put to multiple uses. And, the complete replacement of a pure computing device is not expected any time soon.
