New Update

EGeneral Insurance Corporation of India had started the process of

computerization way back in 1987 and had developed in-house applications for

Reinsurance accounting, Investment accounting, and also for administrative areas

like personnel management, payroll and HR. These complex ranges of applications

had no standard processes for establishment of seamless integration. Due to this

the company spent great deal of time in reconciling the functional figures and

generating management reports and summaries. Due to lack of integration between

different departments, there was lot of manual work done for identification of

account posting transactions in terms of risk by underwriting department and

then the data was consolidated and fed into the system.

The company implemented SAP to streamline the various business functions. The

core module i.e. FS-RI (Reinsurance) and FS-CD (Collection and Disbursement) is

a first of its kind implementation in India. Mapping existing legacy data to the

FS-RI database was a major activity, mainly due to the reason that there was

paucity of consultants who understood the underlying RI database. Also the

legacy data had lot of errors and inconsistencies necessitating data cleansing

work before being migrated to the new system. Despite these hurdles, the company

was successful in implementing the SAP for their business processes. After SAP

implementation, GIC's reinsurance premium income has increased year on year.
