Gigabyte GeForce 7900 GS is a midrange card powered by GeForce 7900 GS GPU
and has 256 MB of GDDR3 memory with a 256 bit memory interface. This one, like
XFX 7600 GT (reviewed this month) also uses a Zalman fan for cooling solution.
It has a core clock speed of 546.8 MHz and memory speed of 720 MHz. It is SLI
ready and has support for HDTV.
Performance wise this card scored a decent 5547 in 3D Mark06 with 1024x768
resolution, slightly higher than that of XFX GeForce 7600 GT. In
Fear, it scored a maximum of 177 FPS at maximum setting (AA-4x & AF— 16x), which
is interestingly much higher than the Fatal1ty card, we reviewed last month. In
Prey, it scored at par with Fata1ty, with a score of 68 FPS at default setting
(AA-none, AF—2x). The real twist came in DOOM3 where it just managed about 17.7
FPS with maximum setting, which is pathetically lower than Fatal1ty's 105.6 FPS.
It is priced higher than both, XFX GeForce 7600 GT Fatal1ty and XFX GeForce
7600 GT (Zalman fan), and performance wise the difference amongst them is
marginal. Anyway, the card is Vista ready and supports all Direct x 9.c games,
restricting you from playing any Direct X 10 games.
Bottom Line: Other cheaper options are available with similar
performance potential.
