New Update

This card falls in the mid-range gaming segment of the graphics card spectrum. It has an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro graphics processor unit, 128 MB DDR graphics memory, AGP 8X system interface and full support for DirectX 9.0 graphics library.

Apart from the regular monitor output, it also has DVI-I and S-Video outputs, but doesn’t have any video capture option, which was there in the Radeon 9200 card, reviewed above.

We tested the card with the same configuration as the Radeon 9200. As can be seen from the results table (given in the GeForce FX 5900 review, page 107), it was significantly ahead of the Radeon 9200, thereby justifying the price differential. Also while playing Unreal Tournament 2003, one of the most resource taxing games, at the highest resolution of 1600x1200, we did not feel any frame skips or jerks, as we did with the 9200. But, when we tested the card with the latest 3D Mark 2003 benchmark, which supports the new DirectX 9.0 graphics libraries, we found that the results were not very satisfying. Even then, the results are good for the price. Also, the fact that it supports DirectX 9.0 and the more expensive GeForce 4 Ti doesn’t, is an added bonus in this card. The GeForce 4 Ti still supports DirectX 8.1 only.
