In 2023, folding smartphones will be commonplace in the Android smartphone market. And we anticipate Google to join the foldable ranks this year with the long-awaited Google Pixel Fold.
The Pixel Fold has long been rumoured, but all evidence points to 2023 being the year it eventually makes its grand premiere. And what a debut it is proving to be. Here's everything you need to know about the Google Pixel Fold, including the most recent renderings, hands-on photographs, specifications, and more.
Google Pixel Fold design
- Our first authentic look at the Pixel Fold came on 14 November, when FrontPageTech shared a slew of renderings of the phone's final design.
- At first sight, it appears to be the same device as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 — with a cover display on the exterior and a more prominent, tablet-like display when folded up.
- However, there are a few significant design distinctions to be aware of.
- The Pixel Fold's outside screen appears far broader than the relatively small one on the Fold 4 and seems much closer to the aspect ratio of a "regular" phone.
- When the Pixel Fold is unfolded, a significantly larger screen with a horizontal landscape orientation appears inside.
- It's a different arrangement from the Z Fold 4 and, in terms of form factor, should be reasonably close to the Oppo Find N and Oppo Find N2.
Pixel Fold specs
- Regarding the Pixel Fold's specifications, things get a little murkier. According to OnLeaks, the foldable will be powered by Google's Tensor G2 chipset, which is also in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
- A January Geekbench test revealed the Pixel Fold features 12GB of RAM, and we can safely presume 128GB of storage.
- Display expert Ross Young revealed in May 2022 that the Pixel Fold would have a 5.8-inch cover panel and "a larger aspect ratio than the Samsung 6.19-inch Fold 4," which is seen in FrontPageTech's images.
- In terms of the inside screen, Ross revealed in November that the Pixel Fold would sport a 7.57-inch display.
- The interior screen is likewise believed to feature an OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz.
- The battery capacity of the Pixel Fold is one of the few unknowns. Pixels' battery life has never been strong, and few foldables are recognised for their durability.
- It's conceivable that Google will discover a method to construct the Pixel Fold with outstanding battery life, but the chances are low.
Google Pixel Fold price and release date
Foldable phones have never been known for their low costs, and the Pixel Fold should be no exception. According to FrontPageTech, the Google Pixel Fold will cost $1,799 — the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 4. It's comforting to know that the Pixel Fold will be less costly than Samsung's device, but it appears to have a different competitive price than its Pixel 7 and 7 Pro siblings.
What about the release date? The Pixel Fold was expected to ship in the fourth quarter of 2022, but it has already utterly missed that target. There were reports that the foldable would be unveiled in May 2023, following Google's annual I/O conference; however, that timeline needs to be included.
