In order to compete with ChatGPT, Google claimed in a blog post that it is creating an AI model that covers more than 1,000 languages.

Back in November, when the ChatGPT made its debut, Google also said that it would be developing a language model that would handle over 1,000 language models, including the most widely spoken language in the world.

The tech giant claims that USM is a collection of cutting-edge speech models with 2 billion parameters that were trained on 12 million hours of speech and 28 billion words of text in over 300 languages.

Google stated in a blog post that "USM, which is intended for use in YouTube (e.g., for closed captioning), can perform automatic speech recognition (ASR) not only on widely spoken languages such as English and Mandarin, but also on under-resourced languages such as Amharic, Cebuano, Assamese, and Azerbaijani, to name a few."

USM, according to Google, will serve as the "basis" for a much larger system and supports more than 100 languages. In the meantime, in preparation for the upcoming introduction of a number of AI features for its products, Google plans to incorporate the text-to-image generator into Gboard for Android.

Open AI, a technology startup based in San Francisco, has seen a lot of interest in its ChatGPT AI platform.

The company had 200 million users in just a few months, making it the fastest platform to expand at this rate.
