New Update

This is the book for freshly appointed network administrators to handle network security. It discusses all the TCP/IP ports and the services that use them in Windows, Linux and various Unices. Those new to security might find it useful, though we think it needn't have been so elaborate. The book is divided into four parts. First is an overview of network security, second talks of intrusion defense mechanisms to combat spoofing, sniffing, flooding etc, the third serves as a good reference for understanding known security loopholes in popular OSs, applications and network devices such as Cisco routers and the fourth discusses security policy guidelines and how to plan network security. The book carries lengthy code on how to build your own sniffers, creating RPC Trojans etc. The listing could have been avoided as the same code is also given on the accompanying CD. Instead the book could have explained the code with code snippets. The CD also carries some software discussed in the book and a useful security software for Windows, called TigerSurf 2.0. We tried to compile some of the code given on the CD and it worked fine.
