Recently, Riot Games acknowledged that the business had experienced a cyberattack. The US-based video game firm announced the hack on Twitter, describing it as a "social engineering attack."

Users were also given assurances by the corporation that the security issue did not impact any player information or personal data. In a recent series of tweets, Riot has claimed that the source codes for a number of its well-known video games were also taken in the cyberattack.

According to the company, the source codes for well-known video games like "League of Legends" and "Teamfight Tactics" (TFT) were stolen.

Riot added that the code for one of its anti-cheat platforms has also been stolen by hackers. After its investigation of the attack is finished, the company has promised to release an update for the players.

How Riot Games has been affected by this ransomware attack

Riot reported that the hackers responsible for this data breach have also sent the company a ransom email, which the company has refused to pay. The amount that the hackers have requested has not been officially disclosed by the company.

Motherboard, on the other hand, claims that the hackers demanded $10 million from the publisher of video games.

Additionally, the company asserts that the data breach may cause issues in the coming days and that this attack has "disrupted" its "build environment."

"Exposure of source code can increase the likelihood of new cheats emerging," Riot stated. Since the attack, the company has stated that it has been evaluating its impact on the anti-cheat platform. Riot added, "Prepared to deploy fixes as quickly as possible if necessary."

In addition, Riot Games stated that it would publish a comprehensive report in the future that would describe the methods used by the attackers, the areas in which Riot's security controls failed, and the measures it is taking to prevent this from happening again.
