The year before last, Seagate had lost out to Samsung for the top spot. It made a come back last year by beating Samsung by a huge margin. This year, it has further widened this gap. Seems that the hard drive giant is on an upswing. It's possibly because the company has been aggressively increasing its market visibility in the recent past. It announced 5-years warranty on all its drives last year, and kept launching lots of new hard-drive models. These included not only regular internal drives, but also the portables and small form factor ones. This doesn't imply that other manufacturers were sitting idle; rather Seagate has managed to capture the maximum mind share. IBM hard drives, now owned by

Hitachi, number three last year, has barely managed to remain in the Users' Choice Club this year.

Maxtor, which didn't figure in the club last year, has managed to secure the number three position this year. Sadly, both Maxtor and IBM are far behind the winner and the runner up. Seagate seems to have strong brand loyalty amongst its existing users. Very few of them opted to choose another drive for their next purchase. Samsung, needs to put its act together, because 21% of its existing owners said that they would choose Seagate as their next purchase option. Similar situation exists with other hard drive brands that didn't make it to the club.
