Honor Returns to India with Honor 90

Honor, a former Huawei subsidiary brand, has made a triumphant return to India. After a three-year delay brought on by geopolitical tensions that led to heightened scrutiny of leading Chinese smartphone companies, the business today introduced a new smartphone, the Honor 90, in the nation. The Honor 90 is a mid-range smartphone with a massive 200MP primary camera, a 6.7-inch OLED display that is curved on all sides, and a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 CPU.

The phone's display, which is curved on all four sides for a floating illusion and a more engaging viewing experience, may be its most impressive feature. Additionally, that display has a 1.5K resolution and 3840Hz PWM Dimming technology.

Honor talked a lot about PWM dimming technology at the event, talking about how it's much easier on the eyes than other smart displays because it almost completely eliminates flicker.

The Honor 90 also runs MagicOS 7.1 based on Android 13, which should be a thing of the past for ex-Huawei users. It promises a clean and bloatware-free user experience, although the promise of software updates is a bit disappointing with two Android updates and three years of security updates - certainly lagging behind rivals in this price range.

Under the hood is a shrunken version of the older chip called the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Accelerated Edition (4nm). Photography is handled by a 200-megapixel primary camera sensor supported by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The battery capacity is 5000mAh and it supports 66W fast charging.

The launch of Honor 90 marks the return of Honor to India after a long hiatus. Although the company has stopped selling smartphones in the country, it has never confirmed that it is not working. But now that it's back, the company is heavily involved in India and plans to start local production of its phones early next year under a licensing deal with PSAV Global, a local partner that handles marketing, distribution and after-sales services. The company has invested $120 million to launch its India business and plans to generate revenue of $1.2 billion by the end of 2024. The Honor 90 is available in two storage variants: 8GB RAM, 256GB storage and 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, priced at Rs 37,999 and Rs 39,999, but with initial offers it will be priced at Rs 27,999 and Rs 29,999. The phone will go on sale exclusively on Amazon.in starting September 18.
