The high costs of laser printers have kept them out of reach of smaller establishments. The LaserJet 1000 is an attempt by HP to penetrate this segment.

The printer offers you two resolutions: 300 and 600 dpi. It also offers an Economode, which helps in saving the toner, particularly useful for things like printing rough drafts of long documents. A custom mode also lets you print images in halftone, and toggle the RET (Resolution Enhancement technology) setting. It also lets you add a watermark to your document, which is basically text printed in a light shade in the background. Connection to a computer is through USB, but it cannot connect to a network by itself.

This printer is rated at 10 ppm, with the first page being printed within 15 seconds. We were pleasantly surprised to see the printer managing slightly better results. The first page was out in about 13 seconds, and the average ppm came out to be 10.5. Quality-wise also, the printer did well. It was able to print line art as well as curves very smoothly, and also reproduce shades of gray without banding.

At Rs 17,500, this printer is a good buy.
