New Update

This external SCSI tape drive from HP uses the LTO-3 technology. It can backup upto 400 GB data in native mode and 800 GB in uncompressed mode, which makes it suitable for medium sized organizations. The Ultrium 960 tape drive is fully read/write backward compatible with the first and second generations of Ultrium data cartridges. This provides you full protection to your past investments. The drive has compression ratio of 2:1, plus the Ultrium 960's WORM (Write-Once, Read-Many) data protection feature offers a simple and secure method for archiving data. This feature is only available on Ultrium 3 WORM cartridges.

In performance, this was the fastest drive in the shootout. In fact, it even gave better performance than the only other Ultrium 3 drive in the shootout, which was from IBM. The drive took just 5 minutes and 4 seconds to backup 16 GB of data, while the IBM drive took 32 seconds more. While this doesn't sound like a big difference, but it becomes significant when you takeup the amount backed up per hour. It can backup 195 GB per hour, while the IBM drive could manage 177 GB/hour. Going further, it only took 13 seconds to backup a highly compressed and single 794 MB file, which was again the fastest of the lot.

This was also the only drive besides Quantum to ship with two cleaning cartridges, and a backup software.

BOTTOM LINE: Overall, given the features set and terrific performance, the drive is well worth the price. RQS# E25 or SMS 131125 to 9811800601
