was the highest originator of spam in August, accounting for 16.6 per
cent of total global spam volume, states the Symantec Intelligence
Report: August 2011. According to the
report, phishing with Indian geo-location saw an increase of 148.38
per cent from the previous month and Hyderabad topped the list of
Indian cities hosting phishing attacks on non-Indian brands.

Symantec report also states that 100 per cent of Indian brands
targeted for phishing attacks were in the banking sector and spam in
India constituted 74 per cent of all email in August 2011.
Globally, during
August 2011, one in 203.3 emails contained malware which is an
increase of 0.14 per centage points since July 2011

The threat report
finds that one in 207.7 emails are phishing mails and one in 203.3
emails contained malware besides per centage of spam stood at 75.9 in
the month of August, 2011.
As per the new findings spam stood
at 75.9 percent in August (a decrease of 1.9 percentage points since
July 2011).However, Phishing and malware attacks increased during the
same period. While one in 207.7 emails identified as phishing which
is an increase of 0.48 percentage points since July 2011.
Globally, about 3,441
malicious web sites are blocked per day which is a decrease of
49.4 percent since July 2011 and 34.1 percent of all malicious
domains blocked were new in August (a decrease of 1.32 percentage
points since July 2011). 17.3 percent of all Web-based malware
blocked was new in August (a decrease of 3.82 percentage points since
July 2011
