Following Nandan Nilekani's vision of reducing carbon footprints, which in
turn evolved with Infosys's alarming finding that the IT industry is sucking up
natural environmental resources at a rate which is 25% faster than the natural
ability to be replenished, the company formulated a unique Green IT
Implementation. It claims to convert legacy IT infrastructure to a 'green'
system through a future proof solution leveraging virtualization and blade
technology, pre-empting substantial investment, and energy savings as well as
reduction in carbon footprint.
Determining the ROI using green IT products was the biggest problem faced,
followed by encouraging adoption and implementing a Green IT strategy, and
choosing the right partner to fit the bill. Once these hurdles were overcome,
Infosys successfully deployed about 200 individual X86 servers running Windows
2000, 2003 OS for testing and validating various project requirements. These
servers would be consolidated into 8 SUN Blade Servers each with 2x Quad Core
Processors with 32 GB memory each, achieving close to 98% reduction in no.of
servers. Server virtualization from VMWare was chosen as a vital component in
project.
