For starters, IS runs the globally-accessed, 24x7 digital business engine for
Infosys on multiple- platforms using an array of technologies. Rapid growth of
applications and users demanded a robust, on-demand server infrastructure with
reduced TCO/management. A virtualization solution was deployed by Infosys to
address this specific business need, additionally offering Green IT benefits.
The technology used encompassed server consolidation & virtualization, blade
centers and virtual tape libraries, leveraging existing storage virtualization
solution.
As the organization grew with a CAGR of over 45%, Infosys claimed to have
several challenges in terms of scalability and availability of applications.
There were around 160 legacy servers on which applications were running from
years. The hardware was obsolete, and space crunch at the data center along with
cooling and power limitations had started becoming a major hurdle for adding
additional capacity to scale.
Scaling up infrastructure on demand and supporting end-of-life servers were
some of the hurdles IS department faced. The key purpose was to meet stringent
performance, scalability, availability and business continuity requirements,
while managing a low TCO and supporting a Green environment.
