‘Independent Testing’ has been providing a critical quality gate to IT implementations by businesses by improving quality. However it continues to be impacted by requirements, process and program management issues without a single assurance partner across the lifecycle elements.
The emergence of ‘Assurance’ services from Requirements to Release; or what we term ‘IT Lifecycle Assurance’ is sure to be a boon to businesses. This ‘Assurance’ layer will become the effective bridge between Business and IT; ensuring an optimal mix between Defect Prevention and Defect Detection.
Getting requirements right
6 out of 10 IT programs do not get the requirements right, resulting in extensive effort towards rework. Getting Requirements ‘first time right’ requires the right blend of domain understanding, product / application expertise and expertise relating to Requirement Management process and tools available. Surely, being assured that you have defined what is necessary and it is in line with Best Practices, would be an important first step in the successful deployment of IT solutions.
Process and program governance
While defining complete and testable requirements is a good first step, lack of rigorous governance processes across the IT lifecycle continue to be a challenge to customers. 8 out of 10 technology absorption programs don’t meet QCT (Quality, Cost, Time)?goals. Definition and implementation of robust processes in the areas of Change Management, Build Configuration & Release Management and Test Management will ensure that quality gets built-in. Robust processes coupled with a strong Project / Program Governance framework ensure reliability is achieved in a sustained manner.
