New Update

LG launched its Optimus G Pro phablet which can be compared against the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Lenovo K900. In terms of price it competes with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, BlackBerry Z10, etc. But even with a high-end device, LG does not excite us to the same levels as Samsung, HTC or Apple, which is mainly due to its less successful past. LG has been notoriously late with its products in the market and Optimus G Pro is no exception.

Features

The big display smartphone aka phablet comes with a 5.5 inch Full HD 1920x1080 pixels display and is based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. The phablet packs a 1.7 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 CPU and 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory (10 GB usable), expandable up to 64 GB with microSD card slot. The device sports 13 MP rear camera with LED flash and a 2.1 MP front camera for video calling. The phablet offers Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS, NFC, Bluetooth v4.0 and microUSB and features like QMemo; FM Radio etc. are also there. LG has loaded the Optimus G Pro with a 3140 mAh battery.

Performance

In terms of build quality and design, the LG Optimus G Pro is a definite upgrade on the Optimus G. Changes in design include curve body, sleeker edges and big display estate that supports full HD 1280x1080 pixels resolution which is higher than that of Galaxy Note 2's 1280x720 pixels. The phablet is on the heavier side at 172 grams but marginally lighter than Note 2 which weighs 180 grams. The build of the Optimus G Pro is plastic and you also have the Nexus 4-like finish at the back which is glossy and finger print magnet as well. The volume rocker is placed at the middle on left side which is not the usual and you have QMemo button where the volume buttons should have been. The microUSB port is at the bottom.

The phablet runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean version with Optimus UI powering the interface of the skin, which feels smooth, performs fast and looks elegant as well. The hardware on Optimus G Pro is fast, lag-free and offers a joyful experience. LG may be renowned for its high quality display but when it comes to camera lens/sensor, the Korean brand is still someway of the competition. The Optimus G Pro comes with a 13 MP rear camera that is quite effective when light is on offer but using it indoors with flash results in noisy images and is capable of 1080p recording. The 2 MP front camera is good enough for video calling and clicking selfies. The 3140 mAh battery on Optimus G Pro proved quite effective. In our video loop test, the phablet lasted for more than 2.5 hours on Wi-Fi and full brightness when we ran a HD movie on YouTube and still had 16% in the tank. In terms of raw performance, Optimus G Pro scored 19205 in AnTuTu, 11523 on Quadrant and 2536 on Vellamo HTML 5, which is higher than 13632, 6547 and 1832 scored by Samsung Galaxy Note 2.
