New Update

We got our hands on a early copy of Longhorn at the Microsoft Professional Developer Conference. Here are a few screenshots to give you a flavor of what is to be the next version of Windows. Remember that this is very much software in the making, and so things could change dramatically . In fact, even the version shown at the PDC had changes such as transparent dragging of folder windows.

The new Windowed look. Notice the options at the top of the window. CD buring is now built in. Top inset: Selecting a folder changes the options. Below: Further options for what can be done with selected files

Top: The Save As Dialog now has full folder capabilities, including previews, filtering, sorting and zooming of previews

Below:
Hovering the mouse over a graphic file automatically opens a window with an enlarged view of the file
Navigating the directory tree is now much easier as each level in the tree is available as a dropdown at the top of the folder. You no longer need to do hierarchical navigation of your directories. You could jump straight from a folder deep inside your hard drive, right into your DVD

Live filtering of files: Even as you type into the filter dialog, the file view changes to show the results. Note that the filter looks for text anywhere within the file names and not just at the start of the file names

One of the focal points of Longhorn is to provide a richer multimedia experience. This is how the PCQuest DVD looks when run on Longhorn. Note the richer colors and the depth of the graphic as compared to earlier versions of Windows
