Market Trends 2020: Facial Recognition Technology

Due to the benefits it offers, facial recognition has been gaining prominence in recent times adding value to dumb CCTV cameras. China is the leading adopter of facial recognition technology and has used extensively to track the citizens and bad elements.

In some other countries, Facial Recognition is finding new applications Healthcare, Retail, Hospitality, casinos etc. China also used facial recognition in combination with other technologies to control Covid-19 pandemic.

Facial Recognition and Covid-19 Pandemic: Facial Recognition software included in CCTV cameras in streets and mounted on the drones have been extensively used to track the infected and quarantined citizens of Covid-19.

This helped them to contain the virus. In South Korea, extensive use of thermal cameras with facial recognition software to get real-time alerts about the people having fever and intercepting them immediately.

Facial Recognition Software OEMs are enhancing their products to recognize people even with masks on. And many of them have achieved success in identifying people with masks. In future, the facia recognition based biometric attendance system, facial recognition-based contactless door opening systems will be the trends that will also help to reduce the chances of infections due to touch-based biometric attendance or door opening systems.

With improving algorithms, the forensic use of technology is also not ruled out. The face plus body detection, body paint detection, face detection with sketch will make the results more accurate.

Healthcare – One of the best use cases is tracking the movement of patients bearing contagious disease. The access control, visitor management and a higher level, detection of certain types of disease based on facial pattern, eye zone colouration, skin tone etc. will be tried in the near future.

Retail – Facial recognition technology can personalize your shopping experience. Through facial recognition technology, retail companies can capture the facial expressions of the consumers and optimize their products according to the amount of interest shown or not shown for the products. This is a huge opportunity for retail companies to capitalize on.

With any new technology, there are apprehensions about the data security breach and misuse. Facial Recognition (FR) and AI as a whole is also being viewed with scepticism.

The time is to make the best use to technology with accountability, dignity, value, privacy and trust. Our data with social media platform is wider and have the potential to be misused than our encrypted face signatures in FR. With secure data policy and government regulation, the concern of data breach can be ruled out to a large extent.
