New Update

Virtual Server 2005 R2 is a freely downloadable virtualization solution from Microsoft which allows us to create and manage virtual machines from a browser. We used the enterprise edition of the tool, as the standard edition has been discontinued. The enterprise edition supports more processors and hence better performance of the virtual machine can be drawn out using this tool. This tool can create virtual machines on the host OS from Windows. Any one of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003 can be used as the host operating system for this tool. This tool supports virtualization for both Intel (IVT) as well as AMD virtualization (AMD-V).

Virtual machines created on the host system can be deployed /created and managed through a Web browser or

through a client called VMRCplus. The setup procedure involves the deployment of this tool on top of the said host OS. Once into the tool, a simple user friendly menu is available for creation of a virtual machine using the ISO of the OS or from the CD/DVD. You can use Windows or Linux based OS as guest OS (virtual machine OS).

Once installed, the tool provides multiple options for managing the virtual machines. Configuration of the virtual machine involves creation, inspection and deletion of virtual machines in a relatively easy method. Providing resources like disk space,

RAM, etc to the virtual machine is a fairly easy procedure. You just need to simply click and allocate values to it. Once created, the virtual machine can be set in motion with the simple click of a button. Some of the limitations of this tool are that it cannot use a 64-bit OS as a guest OS. Currently only 32-bit OS can be used as guest OS with each virtual machine using only 1 CPU to work. Providing multiple

processors to one virtual machine is not supported through this tool. Virtual server has been superseded by Hyper-V because of all its limitations and also the growing demands of enterprises in terms of resources per virtual machine and the need for better manageability solution.
