New Update

MTNL has an extensive copper access network across the country; it wanted to

derive its full potential for delivering high-bandwidth broadband to customers

and to open up new revenue streams. Strategically, MTNL had planned to enter the

entertainment domain for delivery of extremely high-quality video and broadcast

channels on the existing infrastructure, paving the way for entry of High

Definition TV in India.

Therefore, they decided to implement IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and

Triple Play on a converged network platform. Triple play means a single

broadband connection terminating to a modem at the user's end through a splitter

to provide broadband internet, IPTV (using set-top boxes) and VoIP.

Currently, MTNL is offering only IPTV and Video on Demand through this

service. The other services that MTNL provides to its customers with this

include Multiplayer Gaming, e-Learning, Video Conferencing, Video Chat and SMS
on TV, and Web Service on TV.

This will work on 4 Mbps bandwidth. However, full Triple Play has still not

been provided, as VoIP is still in the testing phase. As of now, this service is

available only in a few parts of Mumbai and it will be soon extended to other

areas.
