This is a multi-functional 56k plug-n-play modem with a built-in answering machine that can store up to 30 minutes of telephone messages. It can also store up to 30 pages of fax messages when your PC is switched off, and display them later. This makes it a good option over buying separate answering and fax machines. It has drivers for Win 9x/NT and installs easily.

The modem’s front panel has a set of buttons for handling all recorded messages. From here, you can delete, record, and playback messages. The message playback quality is very clear and audible through the modem’s speakerphone. A volume control on the modem lets you adjust the volume. If the speakerphone volume isn’t loud enough, you can connect ampli-speakers to the modem’s speaker jack. The LEDs on the modem’s front panel can indicate if there are any faxes or voice messages that haven’t been accessed.

The modem comes with PhoneTools software. This lets you send faxes through the modem as attached documents, as well as download fax messages onto the PC.

We tested the modem with Internet connections from various ISPs such as VSNL, Mantra Online, and Net4India. It took an average time of 11 to 12 seconds to connect. The maximum throughput we got was 2.4 kbps, which is quite good. However, this also depends on other factors such as telephone line conditions, available bandwidth, etc.

The modem comes with a detailed and user-friendly manual. A soft copy is also available on the accompanying CD. The CD also contains software such as IE 4, PhoneTools, Acrobat Reader 3.01, Prodigy, VDO Phone, and VDO Mail.

Given the multiple functions that the modem can perform, it’s a good choice for small office setups and is worth its price for such establishments.
