New Update

Cisco is the winner in this segment, which has been created by combining the separate switches and routers category from last year. D-Link is number two and 3Com is three. The reason we combined the two segments was that the top three in the two categories were the same last year.

In the combined segment, Cisco increases its lead over the others and Nortel, which had 12 index points in last year, drops off. Our comparisons this year are being done with the brand-switch matrix for network switches from last year.

Brand loyalties for the top three brands remain more or less the same as from last year. Not only are brand loyalties similar, but their brand-switch patterns are also similar. For example, a possible shift of 3Com users this year is 24 percent to Cisco (it was 22 percent last year). D-Link has 31 percent users wanting to go to Cisco this year; this number was 20 percent last year. This is the only big difference from last year.

Before we conclude, let us look at the 'Others' part. What is going to happen to the players who did not make it to the Users' Choice Club could well determine how this segment will play out for the coming year and next year's awards.

This year, 29 percent of those who use other brands say they will move to Cisco, while 13 percent will move to D-Link. Last year, it was

11 percent to Cisco and 5 percent to D-Link. Shift to others is negligible during both the years. In short, Cisco and D-Link are likely to

consolidate their positions in this segment.
