NetWare through Windows Server

One way to allow your Windows clients to access your NetWare server is to install the NetWare client on them. Another way is to set up the Gateway Services for NetWare on each machine (assuming you're using Win 2000/XP clients). Unfortunately,

xconfiguring this is cumbersome. A better way is to configure your Windows 2000 Server in such a way that your Windows clients will see the NetWare shares as ordinary Windows shares. The advantage of doing this is that you don't have to do anything at the client's end. All configurations are done from the server. In this article, we'll tell you how to do this.

First, you need to set up the Gateway Services for NetWare (GSNW) on your Windows 2000 Server. For this, get into the LAN settings of the server through My Network Places. Clicking on Install here will pop up three options of 'Clients, Protocols and Services'. Choose 'Client', and from the list that follows, choose 'Gateway (and client) Services for NetWare'. You'll need to reboot the server once this is installed.

You'll now need a NetWare account with administrative rights (but existing windows 2000 Server users will not need administrative rights). This will be used to link the two servers. For this, go to My Network Places>Entire Network and click on 'Entire Content' hyperlink. Choose 'NetWare or compatible Networks' and you'll see the NetWare server. Double click on this server to see all the NetWare shares and volumes. Choose the one that you'd like your Windows clients to access.

You'll be prompted for the NetWare username and password. If it's a NetWare server running NDS (which in all likelihood would be the case), then you'll need to give the full NetWare username convention, which is 'username.organizational unit.organization name'.

When configuring the Gateway Services for NetWare, you'll need a NetWare account with administrator privileges

Next, open your Windows 2000 Server's Control Panel and run the GSNW applet. From the window that pops up, click on Gateway and enable it when you get the option. From the same window, go to the 'Gateway Account' text box and give the NetWare username and password. Finally, click on Add and you'll be asked to provide the NetWare share that you'd like to provide access to. Here, provide the full path to your NetWare server and give this share a name. Next, click on Permissions and add the users you'd like to provide access to this NetWare share.

With this your Windows clients can access the NetWare server resources without having to log in to it separately. They can simply access the Windows 2000 Server, and a list of the NetWare shares will be displayed along with the regular Windows shares.
