The Maxtor D740X-6L is another UltraATA133 drive. The difference from the 540X is that this one is 80 GB, with an rpm of 7,200. We used the same test bed as was used with the Maxtor 160 GB drive. The drive gave a transfer rate of 42 MB/Sec, which was about 1 MB/sec lower than Seagate’s 7,200 rpm UltraATA100 drive we reviewed earlier. The drive, however, gave better access time and CPU utilization. In disk access time the drive scored 8.6 ms and 1.98 percent in CPU utilization, compared to Seagate 7.86 percent.

UltraATA133 Interface

Till now, most hard drives supported UltraATA100. Even as we went to press, there were just a few motherboards like the Intel Pentium 4 Chipsets from VIA–Apollo P4X266 and ALi Aladdin P4, supporting the new UltraATA133 interface.

The drive is priced at Rs 12,000, around Rs 1,500 more than the Seagate’s 80 GB drive, which is currently priced at Rs 10,500. So if you are using an older motherboard and wish to save the extra cost, then the Seagate drive is currently a better bet.
