Acer TravelMate 4740 has been designed for business professionals and comes with a black matte finish exterior and display. The laptop is heavy at 2.6kg for a 14-inch form factor but is strongly hinged. The keyboard is similar to 'Timeline' series perceptible to touch and comfortable in use. The multi-touch track-pad is precise, smooth and has good sensitivity. What pulled this machine down was its graphic performance due to absence of dedicated graphics but it works just fine for running productivity apps as it scores good 4714 on PC Marks. Battery back-up could have been better. The speakers are placed just above the keyboard and give excellent sound clarity. There are no heating issues in the laptop because the cooling vents are provided on the side.

The notebook is well priced for the hardware configuration and OS (Windows 7 Professional edition) provided, hence, gets the highest on price- score.

Bottomline: Acer TravelMate 4740 is compact and good for productivity apps. It can be considered as an option at the given price.

The JBL speakers positioned on the upper deck above the Function keys deliver the finest stereophonic sound, second best to the Dell XPS L501X. The large side heat vent and the HDD and RAM upgradable rear panel come as standard positives from Lenovo. The battery back-up is not very encouraging, and the glossy screen is prone to finger prints.

It is convenient to use the notebook on laps as it does not get heated up even after working for hours. Its keyboard is comfortable to use with flat keys and a healthy palm rest which makes it comfortable and user friendly. However, the touch-pad is responsive but a let down comes in the form of its rough touch.
