W size="2" face="Arial">hen preparing for the Users’ Choice 1999 survey, we did a quick

survey of users, to help us determine which categories should be considered for inclusion,

deletion, or modification in the new survey. We mailed a questionnaire to the respondents

of the 1998 survey, and got about 250 responses. Note that with the small sample size,

this is meant more as a dipstick, to indicate trends, and not as an alternate user’s

choice survey. Here are some of the results.

  • Most users still use 14" monitors, though 15" is coming in

significantly. And while flat-panel displays look really cool, most users wouldn’t

spend more than Rs 20,000 to buy one…
  • Most respondents said they would specify brands for the hard

disk, floppy drive, CPU, and even keyboard…but not monitors! Strange, for the most

    visible part of a PC.
  • Even video card brands are well-known to the respondents; nearly half

would specify the brand, with Cirrus Logic, Creative and Matrox topping the recall list.
