This software, aimed at enterprises, provides a convenient way to reach an audience that is very likely to read the message because of the nature of the service–SMS! You have to first create customer accounts on the PervasiveSMS server, which can be accessed online at http://62.146.218.235:8080/psms. Each customer account is entitled for contracts for different office locations or departments etc. And under each contract you get user licenses. The customer account gives you access to all the contracts and the licenses therein and there’s also a contract-level access for each of the contracts to watch the usage of each of the licenses. It’s a three-layered hierarchy, which

the company has adopted to facilitate better budget control.

The sent box of PervasiveSMS Desktop software

There are three main components of the service. The first is the client software called PervasiveOne Desktop, which can be installed on any PC with an Internet connection. This is what is used to create and send the messages. The second component is the

PervasiveSMS server which is available online through any Web-browser. The third is the GSM

network itself.

The server transfers the messages from the Desktop software to the GSM network, which finally delivers it to the cell number.

The server processes HTTP requests and manipulates them to communicate with the GSM network. It is built on top of the PHP-based SMS software from Kannel at the 3Glabs. The server works on SuSE Linux 8.0 running Kannel, Apache, Tomcat and MySQL. It supports UCP/EMI, SMPP3.4, SMPP3.3, Nokia CIMD1.37 and 2.0, Sema group SMS200 OIS 4.0 and 5.0, SM/ASI and GSM Modems.

From the interface on the customer account’s login, a user can manage contracts and licenses and view statistics of all the messages sent from the server — whether they’re delivered, failed or their status is unknown. You can also search for messages to find something particular.

The desktop software is easy to use and works like an e-mail client. You can compose messages in a window and connect with the server to send them. Sent messages get transferred into the ‘Sent’ mailbox and till you connect, they are in the ‘Outbox’. While composing messages, you can also use the software’s ‘Translate’ option to reduce the size of the message by replacing words with their common short-forms. Like ‘gr8’ for ‘great’.

The software opens up a browser window to give you access to its functionality. It supports HTTP and SOCKS proxy connections to connect to the Internet. The thing to note about the client software is its compatibility with multiple formats of address books. You can specify an Excel sheet with names and cell numbers to an ODBC-compliant database.

The company also offers a simple XML/HTTP based API to connect to their server and send messages. This is useful for companies who do not want the SMS Desktop product.
