And though it would hide inside laptops where nobody can see it, the company has still given it an attractive metal brushed exterior finish. The drive supports SATA 6 Gb/s interface, which is supposed to provide higher throughput and faster data access. The drive has TRIM command support, which allows the OS to inform the SSD about blocks of data that are no longer in use, so the SSD can wipe that data internally, freeing up space. The SSD also features 128 MB DDR3 cache memory that serves as temporary buffer storage. The high speed transfer interface of buffer storage helps in reducing read/write times of the flash memory so that data gets transferred quickly. The large-capacity temporary storage space reduces the possibility of frequently modified data being written to the flash memory system, thus helping increase the drive's life span. Other features, common with all SSDs are silent operation, less susceptibility to shocks, and very low access time and latency.

We tested the drive's performance on an Intel Core 2 Duo-based machine with 1 GB RAM and Windows 7 Ultimate installed. The Plextor SSD clocked an average transfer rate of 198 MB/sec with 0.2 ms access time on HD Tune benchmark. A similar SSD, Western Digital's SiliconEdge Blue 256 GB had clocked 180.9 MB/sec (reviewed in PCQuest, May 2010), which obviously is a better throughput.

Bottomline: The SSD is ideal for those who want capacity with decent performance on their notebooks, and are willing to pay a premium for it.
