Plus, you get an error that it was unable to open the 'outlook.pst' file. This PST file is used by MS Outlook to store all e-mail. In such a situation, you will have to use a third-party e-mail recovery tool to recover it. Or else, you can use the solution mentioned in this article. A PST file can get corrupted either due to virus attacks or if it grows beyond 2 GB.

On PCQEssential CD: SCANPST.EXE (41 kb), 2gb152.exe (811 kb)

We will use a tool called Scanpst to fix the corrupt PST files and another utility called 2gb152.exe to take care of the 2 GB size problem. It will truncate the file to a manageable size. Be warned though, as you may loose a few mail by using this, but most of it will be recovered.

Search for 'SCANPST.EXE' and then double click on it to run. If it is not on your system, use a copy of it from this month's PCQEssential CD  Browse to the corrupted (Outlook.pst) file and click on the Start button. Depending on the size of the PST file, the tool will scan the corrupted PST file and repair it
If the file size is more than 2 GB, copy '2gb152.exe' from the CD to your desktop, unzip it and run 'PST2GB.exe' Select the PST file, click on Create and give destination path for the new PST file and indicate the size in MB
