Cons: Distortion in bass heavy tracks

Bottomline: The JBL Charge 2 is a versatile portable speaker with good battery life and sound quality. Before buying, take a look at the Bose SoundLink and Bose SoundLink Mini that offer distortion free sound.

Resembling the looks of its predecessor, JBL Charge 2 is a cylindrical shaped portable speaker equipped with dual drivers and twin passive radiators at both ends to deliver accurate and deep bass. Apart from the great looks and sound, the Social Mode makes it stand out from the rest. It allows three different users to wirelessly link their smartphones or tablets to a single Charge 2 wherein you and your friends share your individual play-lists and play them alternatively on the speaker, so the music options never run dry.

All the controls are housed at the rubberized panel at the top of the speaker. The built-in battery can also charge your tablets and smart phones, so you never run out of juice. It also comes with a hands-free speakerphone for handling calls.

Powerful sound quality

Pairing and repairing the speaker is simple and it was instantly recognized by iPhone 5S. On intense bass tracks, the speaker produced deep, rumbling bass but was also accompanied by slight distortion at fuller volumes. When we played sub-intense bass content, it sounded fuller and booming for its size. Vocals were clear and had a powerful presence even at low volumes. The speaker sounded best at 70-80% volume levels with powerful bass but if you crank it too much, it distorts and the bass gets shallow. Classical and pop tracks sounded clean and natural.

The built-in 6000mAH battery delivered a long lasting battery life of about 11 hours. The bluetooth range is usual viz 10 meters and it retained steady connection within it. Apart from that, the music playback was accompanied by dropouts.
